After much research on insulation for interior walls, mainly for sound proofing, I settled on ultra touch denim insulation. I was initially drawn to it because it is such a cool product – insulation out of recycled jean scraps. However, it is expensive at about $90/100 sq ft. But let me tell you, this is the only project I have tackled so far, where I actually exclaimed to myself “Wow, that was easy”.
It comes pre cut to hang in sheets 8′ high and 16″ on center. I scored it with a utility knife and then tore, yes I said tore it to fit bays that were either too short or bays that were smaller. No staple gun, it just snugs right in. I used the little pieces I tore to fit around outlets. And because it is 100% non toxic, a dust mask is all you need!

Hi I am scouting case studies for an upcoming issue of This Old House Magazine. We were actually hoping to do one on denim insulation and would love to talk to you guys. Please send me an email as soon as possible (tight deadline) if you are interested.
Thanks,
Melissa
90/100 per s.f.? this must be a typo, right? or perhaps per sq yard? otherwise the insulation would cost more than the house itself.
It is $90 for about 100 square feet of insulation…..Luckily only doing a few interior walls….
So …. now that its been in, how do you like it? Is it truly meeting your soundproofing needs? I’m considering putting it into a new wall separating my family room w/big screen TV and suround sound system from the rest of the house in order to soundproof. I’d love to hear your review on its actual soundproofing performance.
To be honest, it would be hard to tell you exactly if it would work well for something of that scale. I am using it just to quiet down an old farm house – so you don’t hear every conversation. The combination of the cellulose and denim has made a huge difference, but I don’t know how to attribute it to one or the other…Sorry not to be more helpful but I don’t have a TV or surround sound system…
